The Minsk Yanka
Kupala Central Public Library is a social and cultural information
center. Founded in 1949, it ranks among the most popular cultural
city institutions and is open to general public according to the
Rules of Membership. Anyone over 14 years old may use the Library.
A reader card is required to borrow books and other documents.
It is the Central Library of a State Institution
"The Centralized System of State Public Libraries of Minsk".
The Library coordinates the activity of 23 branches, spread all
over the city. They provide services to over 190 thousand inhabitants
of the capital of Belarus. The collection of the Centralized System
of Public Libraries comprises almost 1 520 thousand items.
The Central Library plays a significant
role in promoting cultural values and national heritage. Today the
Library is active to adapt its services in regard with customers'
needs and works much to introduce modern information technologies
into service. It is a part of the network created by the Belarusian
Ministry of Culture.
One of its main goals is to support the
process of education. Opportunities for reading and studying have
been created in the reading hall, various periodicals are available
for reading there. From a lending department books and magazines
can be borrowed. Bibliographical reference facilities are at the
users' disposal.
The Library collection holds almost 240
thousand items. The stock of books has been carefully chosen to
provide as wide a range as possible. There are fiction and information
books to help library users with homework, study and leisure. The
Library provides information on world and local events, on recent
developments in society, as well as on literature, films and other
art form.
The number of registered users is over 30
thousand. As a socialy inclusive institution the Library gives extra
attention to youngsters, elderly people, disabled persons. It is
a friendly place for everybody and is designed with a special space
for meetings, art events and exhibitions. On the regular basis it
arranges:
- lectures
- literary and musical programs
- discussions with writers, illustrators
and publishers
- presentations of new books
- library tours and instructions in library

- art exhibitions in its
- days of information with exhibitions of
new items
- thematic exhibitions of books
Besides, there is a Center to study German
and a Center of Legal Information.
The Library publishes the information bulletin
"Bibliofact" and has its web-site "Public Library" available

Yanka
Kupala Central Public Library is a paticipant of
international project CALIMERA («Cultural
Applications: Local Institutions Mediating Electronic Resources»).
CALIMERA's guidlines are recently under translation into Belarusian
language. The aim of CALIMERA's guidlines is to provide policy
makers and professionals working in cultural institutions
at the local level (in particular, public libraries, museums
and archives) with a concise and relevant summary of the state
of the art in the use of new technologies.

We
start new catalogue of Internet resourses dedicated to culrural
heritage preservation which includes links to Belarusian public
libraries, museums and archives.
Yanka
Kupala Central Public Library organized an international
conference on trends of public libraries development on November,
2002. A presentation of international project "PULMAN-XT"
took place during the conference. Pulman's
Digital Guidelines Manuals in Belarusian language was presented
in both electronic and analogue (printed) forms during the conference.
