Yauhenia YANISHCHYTS, a poet, was born
into a peasant family on November 11, 1948, in the Brest region of Belarus.
In 1971 she graduated from the Belarusian State University, majoring
in language and literature. She worked as a head librarian, consulted
for a national agricultural newspaper and for the largest literary newspaper.
She was elected deputy for a local Minsk district, and held several
key positions with the Union of Belarusian Writers. She took part in
the UN Assembly in 1981. In 1993 a monument was erected on her grave.
Her first verses were published in 1964. She authored
five poetical books where she shared the experiences of her childhood,
of Belarus, and of her family life. Her lyrics were philosophical and
deeply intimate. Yanischits' verses are considered some of the best
among Belarusian love poems. She used various poetic techniques and
employed rich imagery. She wrote literary articles and reviews. Many
of her verses were turned into songs.
She was awarded the Belarus Comsomol Prize for
her collection of verses Evening Day (1978) and the Kupala
State Prize for her book of verse Time of Love and Sorrow
(1986).
